The Life of a Web Site
by Robyn England of 7 Second Web Design

Part 4: Adulthood, then Death or Immortality

Adulthood (age 1 year+):

You have finally reached your goal of having a successful web site! Your site is now performing just like you imagined during preconception. Seemingly endless hours of work and probably more money than you originally thought are now more than paying for themselves. Life is great. Job well done!

Now what? Is it time to create another site? The first one was so much fun! Well, probably not. Your site doesn’t need siblings. However, it may be time for your site to have some children! What?! I simply mean that you could add some new categories.

Expanding Your Site

When your site was created, it probably consisted a home page, a listings page, and one or two other pages. Why not add some more sections to your site? Anything that can educate a potential client will add value to your site and keep the visitors coming. Perhaps you could add a real estate dictionary or your tips on getting a house ready to show. Maybe you could have a whole section on who to contact to set up phone, cable, or other utilities in your area. Be as creative as you want.

Just remember that the content of your site is what keeps the visitors coming back ... not how flashy it is! If you give your site regular exercise (updates), it will never get old!

Your site can live forever (or as long as you want it to). But if you don’t continually update it and keep it maintained, it will get old and eventually stop generating the amount of business you want.

Death or Immortality

As mentioned before, a web site is immortal. The only good reason for a web site to die is because you want it to. Either you are retiring or leaving the real estate business for some other reason. This is a death with dignity.

But many real estate agents decide to kill their site without cause.

The number one reason for this is they don’t give their site enough time to mature. They have their site created, advertise in a few places, submit to some search engines, then forget about it. They expect to just sit back and watch the business start rolling in. They get frustrated when there is never any mail in their inbox and the phone never rings and decide to give up on their site. They either have their developer take it down, or they don’t renew their host or domain name. What a waste of a perfectly good web site. Don’t let it happen to yours.

Conclusion:

A web site takes time to plan and mature. Most of the time, you will have to make adjustments to your original plan. Treat your site as your "child" and always give it the attention it deserves. You must realize that if used properly, your personal web site can be your best and most cost-effective form of marketing.
